The UrbiGES project
This participatory action research project, led jointly by Université Laval, Futur Simple, and Votepour.ca, brings together around fifteen researchers from diverse disciplines, ranging from communication and psychology to geomatics, social marketing, and forestry. The approach is participatory and interdisciplinary, promoting the co-construction of knowledge and practices with the stakeholders involved.
The project is made possible thanks to financial support from the federal government (Environment and Climate Change Canada – ECCC).
What issue does this project address?
Tackling climate changes is the fundamental challenge of the coming decades, yet climate measures are implemented and face obstacles on the ground, including poor social acceptability. Climate measures are designed from a technical perspective and do not take into account citizen, territorial, professional, and scientific knowledge, making them ill-suited to local realities.
Changing our habits in response to climate changes is not just a matter of technology or regulation. It’s above all about everyday life: how we get around, how we consume, and the environment we live in. For a climate measure to work, it must be understood, perceived as useful and fair, and adapted to the reality of each territory. UrbiGES aims to address these obstacles to facilitate the socio-ecological transition in local communities.
The UrbiGES objectives
-
Understanding households’ capacity to change behaviours.
-
Support the planning and implementation of climate measures adapted to community realities to foster the social acceptability of the socio-ecological transition.
-
Provide decision-support tools for regions.
-
Support citizens in the transition to low-carbon lifestyles.
A window of opportunity for municipalities
Many collective stakeholders in Quebec are taking action (RCM climate plans, public health adaptation plans, the Collectivités Zen, community development initiatives). This creates a unique opportunity to build coherence at the territorial level and engage stakeholders in the transition. Social acceptability is becoming a political imperative, enabling the creation of equitable interventions that are rooted in the diversity of each territory.
The target audiences of the project
-
Municipal professionals, RCMs, elected officials, professionals involved in the planning and implementation of climate measures.
-
Households.
-
The academic community.
